About this tool

Convert JSON into TSV in a single step. JSON is the default interchange format for web APIs; TSV is tab-separated data, common in bioinformatics and database exports. The converter is structure-aware rather than a text substitution, so nesting, types and ordering are preserved.

When you would use it

  • Working with JSON data in a codebase that expects TSV
  • Migrating a dataset from JSON to TSV
  • Inspecting JSON in a shape that is easier to read

Worked example

JSON
{
  "id": 4815,
  "name": "Ada Lovelace",
  "active": true,
  "score": 91.5,
  "roles": ["admin", "editor"],
  "address": { "city": "London", "postcode": "NW1" }
}
TSV
id	name	active	score	roles[0]	roles[1]	address.city	address.postcode
4815	Ada Lovelace	true	91.5	admin	editor	London	NW1

Things worth knowing

  • Tabs separate the fields. Because tabs rarely appear inside data, quoting is almost never needed.
Questions

Frequently asked

Is JSON to TSV conversion lossless?
Not entirely. TSV is flat, so nested structures are flattened into dot-notation columns. The data survives and can be rebuilt, but the shape is expressed in the column names rather than the structure.
Why convert JSON to TSV?
JSON is the default interchange format for web APIs, while TSV is tab-separated data, common in bioinformatics and database exports. Converting is usually about handing data to a tool that only speaks one of them — an API client, for instance.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every tool on JSONWorks runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your input is never sent to a server, never logged and never stored. The simplest proof is to disconnect from the internet — the tools keep working. The site does load Google Fonts and a Google Analytics page-view tag, so you will see those two requests in your network tab, but neither receives anything you type or paste.
